It's Going to be a Great Year!

Welcome to 2022! I saw this and seriously laughed out loud.

Can you believe in March it will be 2 years since a microscopic virus shut down the world? Two years later and things are almost back to normal here in Utah. The Coronavirus is still an ever changing epidemic. The Delta Variant wrecked havoc a few months ago and now the Omnicron variant is surging. This variant spreads easily, but the symptoms are less severe. All I can hope is that this virus will go away soon, or we will all just learn to live with it like we do the common cold or seasonal flu.

In January our home turned upside down. We are nearing the ending stages of our remodel and are finally ready for paint and carpet, so we had to move all of our stuff out of the main level of our house. We all moved upstairs to the bonus room while the painters and carpet guy worked on our house. Mom and dad slept in the bonus room bedroom and all the kids slept in the playroom part of the bonus room. It was like one big sleepover! It was definitely a change of routine for us, but we all managed just fine.

The basement became our dinner table and where we would hang out at nights watching tv and doing homework.

Check out this amazing January sunrise.
Poor Grandma Bonnie has not had a very good start to the year. She has been battling a leg wound that is taking a long time to heal, but in addition to that, right after Christmas she fell and became really disoriented. She ended up in the hospital, and we were all so worried for her. But she is a fighter and a trooper. After a week or so she was released from the hospital and went into a rehab facility. Unfortunately in the rehab facility she contracted Covid. Her recovery has been slow, but she is getting better and stronger everyday. This is the cutest picture of Craig and his mom.
And poor Makayla has not had a good start to the year either. She got a really bad ear ache, so I finally took her into the doctor. Makayla has always had a lot of ear wax build up, but this time there was too much ear wax to see if she had an ear infection, so the doctor and nurse had to try to clean it out by irrigating it. It was not a fun experience at all for Makayla. At one point she started crying and said she wanted it all to stop. She did in fact have an ear infection, so we were able to get her an antibiotic and she was feeling much better a few days later.
Brynnli loves her "ear muffins".
Tyler and I got to go on our favorite date of the year. For a few years now we have gone to dinner in January to talk about our personal, family, financial, and professional goals for the year. We always have great conversation, and it is such a good chance to get on the same page. Our dinner this year was at one of our favorite restaurants, Carvers. I forgot to take a picture of my food, so you get a picture of my leftovers. It was delicious.
Yep, mid January we were still in the middle of our project. The painters came and aside from a slight mix up with the wall and trim colors, we were loving the progress of our house.
Early morning hanging out with dad in his home office.
Caden is back at it with his Jr. Jazz team. We are so proud of Caden and the progress his has made this year. He has made a lot of assists and rebounds for his team. His team hasn't won a game, so Caden is really disappointed at the end of each game, but he is really loving his team and coach.
Aww, I love this little muggie! Bella might be her name, but we call her Bellies, Muggies, Muggie Moos, Stinkie Winkie, and Doggies.
And yes, she is still the most spoiled dog and we love her to pieces!
After the paint was done, our carpet arrived. I was so excited for our carpet, but as soon as the carpet installer put it in the room, I looked at Tyler and said, "oh, no!" It looked so much darker and browner than I anticipated, and I could see that it would leave foot marks and tracking. I was really worried about it and cried quite a bit, but Tyler really liked it, so I kept hoping that once it was all installed, it would look better.

Even if I was questioning our carpet choice, I was really loving the white banister, fireplace mantle, paint color, and new dining room light.

As soon as our carpet is installed and our new furniture is in I will be doing a whole post of our new remodel, so stay tuned.

The kiddos had dentist checkups, and unfortunately Brynnli had her very first cavity. Brynnli is the first of our kids to have a cavity. It could be the fact that she loves Dr. Pepper like me. Oops. Good thing we have a great dentist who kept Brynnli very calm while he filled her cavity. Brynnli got her first experience with laughing gas.
Look at how good Caden is at coloring. Caden still loves Mario Brothers (not as much as x box, though).
One of Caden's favorite games to play on X box is Madden NFL 2022. He loves to play as the Tennessee Titans team. Well it just so happens the Tennessee Titans were playing in the AFC Championship game, so we watched it. We were hoping they would win because they would play in the Super Bowl, but unfortunately they lost in a really close game. Caden was pretty devastated, but he said there's always next year.
Let me tell you, I know nothing about football, but I love watching games with Caden because he gets so into it and yells at the t.v when he thinks they have made a good play (and when they make bad plays too). Caden is such a cute kid!

Look at our little Bellies being so well behaved.
Kenzee and Mason had their birthday party at Altitude Trampoline park. We all had fun, except Tyler who had to stay home because he was sick.
Caden played is last Jr. Jazz game of the season. Remember how last summer his team was undefeated? Well this season his team lost every single game. Despite losing, this was probably Caden's best season yet. Caden learned so much about the game and improved so much.

His coach even asked Caden if he wanted to join a competitive league that he was coaching, so there will be a lot more basketball in our future. Caden's coach said he chose Caden because he was a really hard worker and would always take the corrections the coach gave him and apply it. He also said Caden was a really good teammate and was always so encouraging to all the players. We are so proud of you Caden!!

Makayla went with me to the Utah Gymnastics meet. We had an eventful time getting there. We decided to take trax, but it took a long time to get there, the train kept getting more and more crowded with every stop, and Makayla was wearing a sweatshirt that was making her really hot. Do you know what that's a disaster recipe for? We were about 4 stops from the stadium when I looked at Makayla's pale, white face and started to take my wallet and other items out of my clear backpack so she would have something to throw up in. I tried to place myself between her and the person squeezed right next to us who could also tell that she was going to throw up. I looked around trying to figure out my next move. Luckily seconds later the train stopped at the next stop and I grabbed her hand and pushed people aside to get her outside to the fresh air. We made it just in time and Makayla was able to take some deep breaths to help her. Crisis averted! The bad news? We had to wait 30 minutes for the next train to arrive. We finally made it to the gymnastics meet and I bought Makayla a t shirt so she didn't have the same experience on our train ride home.

It was also Princess and Hero day at the Gymnastics meet, and even though Makayla says she is "so over princesses," I still made her pose next to Cinderella.
We had a great time together. I love as Makayla is getting older, she is becoming so much fun to hang out with. I love hanging out with my bestest little friend!
Hey did you know Tyler started a new job? Remember DMC Mining Services that he used to work at before Cememtation? Well he's back working for them. Tyler didn't even apply for this job, they reached out to him. DMC used to do a lot of projects in the U.S., but they are trying to get back as one of the main mining contractors here in America and they hired Tyler to get their U.S. side of projects going again. This job was not an easy one to take, and there were a lot of conversations, pro and cons list, stressful nights (and lots of tears on my side), but I think we made the right decision to leave Cementation. Tyler's new title is Director of Estimating and Continuous Improvement. This job is working from home with a little bit of travel. Since Tyler will be working from home permanently, we decided to redo the room downstairs into an official office. This was Tyler on his first day of work on January 31st. Doesn't he look so professional?
Until you realize that he is wearing a dress shirt with sweat pants. As Tyler explains, business on top, comfort on bottom.
Lots of changes to start the year off, but we are ready for the new year and all the fun we will have. Bring on 2022.

Our New Normal

2021 was supposed to be a different year. It was supposed to be a year that was so much better than 2020. It was supposed to be a year where everything went back to normal. In all reality, 2021 was a year that was unique and full of challenges, with a glimmer of hope that things are gradually getting back to normal. I guess we are just learning to live with our new normal. Overall, 2021 seemed to be a year where the world seemed to fall apart, but we became stronger as a family.

January 6 our nation's Capitol was attacked and congress was forced to evacuate. January 20, President Joe Biden was inaugurated into office and Vice President Kamala Harris made history as the first female Vice President. In February, the US death toll from Covid 19 surpassed 500,000. In March a large cargo ship got stuck in the Suez Canal, snarling global trade operations for 6 days. Utah, again, was in an extreme drought and Governor Spencer Cox issued several drought related executive orders. The Great Salt Lake reached the lowest level on record. In August, west winds brought smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Idaho to the Valley making Salt Lake City have the worst air quality in the world. Porch Pirates, or thieves who steal packages from homes, have become more prevalent. Businesses are in need of workers, but many business have had to scale back again because they don't have enough workers. Shipping containers are stuck in boats and can't reach the port, so supply chain issues are becoming a big problem and many store shelves are empty because of it. The cost of gas is rising to almost 3.50 a gallon.

You would read this and believe the world is falling apart. But in the midst of all the chaos, our family found peace and we became stronger together this year. We spent weekends trying new family adventures like bike rides and hikes. We spent nights snuggled in our pajamas, eating popcorn and watching a family movie. We added a new fur baby to our family and fight over who gets to hold the leash when we take her for a walk around the block. We laughed and played together on our family vacation to Universal Studios and Lego Land. We experimented with cool science projects while we were quarantined. We celebrated watching sports in person again and cheered on the Utes as they earned a spot in the Rose Bowl. We partied together with our extended families and basked at being together again. We celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, new jobs, and new experiences with all three kids in school all day. We spent weekends at The Land and summer days at the pool with our cousins. We enjoyed dinners on our patio and late night outdoor movies.

The little (and big) moments we shared together as a family really showed us what life is all about. We decided how we want to venture into 2022 and are establishing new patterns, jobs and routines to ensure we can spend more time as a family focusing on each other and the little things that make life mean the most. It's true: a truly extraordinary life is living a beautiful ordinary life.

Ringing in the New Year

The week after Christmas was a little different this year because we are getting ready for paint and carpet in our house, so we spent most of our week doing projects. These projects make our normal routine kind of hard , but we can't wait to start out the new year with a new house.

Kayla and I love to make drink runs, and this time we took Bella with us so she could get her own pup cup.
We took the kids to see Sing 2. It was so cute and we have been listening to the songs non stop since then.
For New Years we made a really yummy steak dinner with baked potatoes, artichokes, and rolls.

Then we played games and watched a movie.
We had our yummy cookie cake for dessert
And then settled in to watch the countdown. Some of us made it and others did not..
We rang in the new year by running outside in the freezing cold, yelling "Happy New Year!"
We celebrated with sparkling juice then called it a night.
Bring on 2022 and see you 2021!!

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas time is here at last. We have been waiting all season for our favorite days of the year that are full of fun, family, and traditions. Our plan was start at Grandma Terry and Grandpa Craig's, then head to Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Bob's house, then head back to Craig and Terry's for the late night party. We were so excited to be with the big family, but we found out just before we were supposed to leave that Karly had covid, so there had to be some last minute changes. We were still going to get together with the Joneses and Granndpa and Grandma, but we wouldn't be with the whole family. We were disappointed we wouldn't be able to be with our whole family, but we were just so excited that we could be together and still do our traditions.

Christmas Eve is sometimes hard because we have to say goodbye to Kitty. He gave the kids a nice note and left some kisses.

Tyler and I always give the kids an outfit on Christmas Eve that they wear that night. They are never that excited about clothes, but oh well.
We decided to get them a surprise that they have been needing for a while... a new tramp! Our current tramp is a hand-me-down from my brother. It has been well used over the last 6 years. The net broke, it has a whole in it, and the frame is barely holding up, so we decided they needed a new one. We can't wait for spring to set it up.
We had them come upstairs for the surprise. From the look on her face, I would say Makayla was surprised, although she told me later she was really hoping it would have been a puppy.
We our family pictures. I love that we have our new family member with us in the picture.
We went over to Craig and Terry's and we did the $5.00 game.
Caden was holding back his sadness when he got women's socks. Luckily he was able to trade for a Christmas game that he was much happier about.
Then we went to Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Bob's house. We had to document that Makayla is almost as tall as Grandma Kathy.

We had our traditional pizza dinner. It was fun because almost all of the grand kids were there. There was a moment when we were eating dinner and I looked around at the full house, and even though it was quieter, I thought it was crazy how much my family has changed in the last 10 years. Things are a little different, but we are learning to make new traditions and make the best of the situation.

The kids were so excited to open presents. Brynnli was hoping all day she would get the poop dog that she wanted... and she did! Makayla got some Harry Potter Legos and Caden got an x box gift card and a new bat.

Darren got my parents a extra big remote, because that's what old people need.
My dad surprised Tyler and my brothers with another trip to Alaska to go fishing. I'm glad they can all go again and make some new memories.

After the party with my family, we headed back over to Craig and Terry's. We had the talent show where Brynnli read "Toad on the Road" and we all laughed at the sassy way she said, "What do you think YOUR MAMA would say?"
Caden played some Christmas songs on the piano.
And Makayla and I did our talent with cups. I need to teach Tyler to take pictures when I'm not able to.

Then we opened presents. Makayla got the water bottle and stickers she wanted from Tammy. Caden got another x box gift card and a huge package of Reeses Peanut Butter cups from Karly, and Brynnli got a Barbie set from Ryan.

We had so much fun this Christmas Eve, but we really missed being with the whole family. We were so happy we could still do our same Christmas traditions like dancing in the street while Tyler plays the accordion.
After our parties we came home and the kids set out treats for Santa and his reindeer. Caden left a note asking Santa to sign his paper.

Then it was time to give one last hug to Kitty.

Then they were off to bed in hopes that Santa would deliver... and boy did he ever!!!

Santa even brought Bella some presents.
I love this picture on the stairs.
I love how Tyler makes them stay on the stairs for a long time until he lets them run in and see their gifts. This year Caden got a new mountain bike.
Brynnli got an American Girl doll
Bella got a new toy.
And Makayla got Harry Potter Legos.

The kids got so many gifts that they asked for as well as some surprises. Caden got Legos, more x-box gift cards, and games.

Makayla got a necklace with her name on it and a smart watch.

Brynnli got barbies, and more American Girl toys, and games.

All of the kids got google homes, which I think will be a good thing. Now instead of all being in the kitchen, they can be in their rooms yelling, "hey google... hey gooo-gle!"

Bella's first thing she got to open was a bone and she was gone the rest of the time chewing on it. She didn't want any of her other things... just her bone. We did manage to get her attention long enough to put on her new outfit.
After presents the kids gave us some presents. Makayla gave us a book of poems and stories called "Chicken Soup for the Holiday Soul". So many of the things she wrote made me cry. She wrote about her favorite Christmas memory and how she loves spending time with family.

We spent Christmas Day at Craig and Terry's celebrating with Craig's side of the family. We love this Christmas season and spending time with our family.
